Ten questions a repair counter gets every week, and the answers that save a device

The questions people bring to an independent repair shop are remarkably consistent, and so are the answers, most of which are settled by paperwork rather than opinion.

Independent repair shops handle the same conversations over and over. The questions are consistent because the products fail in consistent ways, and most of the answers come out of documents rather than out of judgment: warranty terms, parts catalogs, service manuals, and the shop's own labor rate.

Set out as a counter conversation, here is what those exchanges contain.

Will opening it void the warranty?

Not by itself, and the sticker saying so is doing less work than it appears to. Under federal warranty law a manufacturer generally cannot condition warranty coverage on the use of its own service or parts unless those are provided free of charge. What a manufacturer can do is decline to cover damage that the outside repair actually caused.

The practical answer: if the device is inside its warranty term, use the warranty first. It costs nothing. If it is outside the term, the sticker is decoration. The Federal Trade Commission is the body that oversees warranty practices of this kind.

Is it worth repairing?

The shop arithmetic is simple and it is the same everywhere. Take the repair quote. Compare it against the replacement cost of an equivalent device, and against the remaining useful life of this one.

The rough thresholds most shops use: under a third of replacement cost, repair without hesitating. Between a third and two-thirds, it depends on the age and on whether the device still gets software updates. Above two-thirds, replace.

Two exceptions override the arithmetic entirely. The first is data that exists nowhere else, which makes the specific unit irreplaceable regardless of price. The second is a fitted installation: a wall-mounted panel, a built-in appliance, a controller wired into a system. Substituting those means paying for the device and then paying again for the installation, so the repair threshold on anything mounted in a wall sits much higher than on anything that sits on a desk.

Why is the quote mostly labor?

Because the part is often a few dollars and the disassembly is an hour. A modern device is a stack of glued and clipped assemblies in a specific order, and the order is not optional.

This is also why two repairs on the same device cost wildly different amounts. A port replacement on a board that unclips is quick. The same port on a board buried under a screen and a battery is a different job entirely, and the difference was decided by an engineer years ago.

Can you get the part?

The real gate. Parts availability, not skill, is what determines whether a repair happens.

Three tiers, and it is worth knowing which one a product sits in before you buy it:

  • Manufacturer sells parts and publishes service documentation. Repairs are routine and priced predictably.
  • Parts exist through the aftermarket or through harvested units. Repairs happen, quality varies, and the shop should tell you which it is using.
  • No parts at all. The device is effectively disposable regardless of how simple the fault is.

You can determine the tier before buying. Search the model number together with the word teardown, and search it alongside the words replacement part. If both searches return results, the device is repairable. If neither does, assume the first fault ends it.

The other thing worth checking is whether the manufacturer sells to independent shops or only to its own network. A device serviced exclusively through authorized channels has one price and one schedule, and both are set by whoever controls the parts.

How long does a battery actually last?

Batteries are measured in charge cycles, not in years, and they degrade on a curve rather than failing outright. Heat is the accelerant. A laptop that lives on a bed or in a hot car ages its battery considerably faster than one that does not, and a device left at full charge in a warm place ages faster than one cycled in the middle of its range.

A battery replacement is the highest-return repair there is on most portable devices, because it restores the single characteristic people replace the device over.

It got wet. What now?

Power off immediately and do not attempt to charge it. Do not run it to see if it works, because the damage from a short circuit while wet is worse than the water.

Rice does nothing useful. What matters is getting it to someone who will open it, clean the board with the appropriate solvent, and address corrosion before it spreads. Time is the variable that decides this one, measured in hours rather than days.

Why does the shop want to know what happened?

Because the fault history narrows the diagnosis faster than any test. A device that was dropped, a device that stopped charging gradually, and a device that died during a firmware update are three different repairs with three different first steps.

Nobody at the counter is assigning blame. They are trying to avoid billing you for an hour of diagnosis you could have replaced with a sentence.

The details that help most: when it last worked normally, what changed between then and now, whether anything was connected to it at the time, and whether anyone has already attempted a repair. That last one matters more than people expect, because a previous attempt changes what the shop will find inside.

Can you get my data off it?

Usually, and it is frequently a separate service from the repair. A device that will not power on often has perfectly intact storage.

The honest counter answer is that this is the one job where the shop cannot promise an outcome, and where the price sometimes exceeds the value of the hardware. It is also the reason every conversation about backups happens at a repair counter rather than before.

Should I just buy the extended warranty next time?

Read what it covers before deciding. Many extended plans exclude the two things that actually happen, which are accidental damage and battery wear, and duplicate coverage you may already hold through a payment card or a homeowners policy.

Three questions settle it. Does it cover accidental damage, or only mechanical failure? Does it cover battery degradation, and at what threshold? Does it pay for repair, or does it replace with a refurbished unit of the company's choosing?

The alternative most shops would quietly recommend: buy the device with better parts availability and put the plan's price in a drawer against the eventual repair.

What should I look for when I replace it?

The features that predict a long service life are unglamorous and easy to check in advance.

  1. Published parts availability and a service manual.
  2. Screws rather than adhesive holding the case together.
  3. A battery that is a module, not a soldered component.
  4. A stated support horizon for software updates.
  5. Standard connectors rather than proprietary ones.

None of those appear in advertising and all of them appear in a teardown video or a support page. Ten minutes of that reading before a purchase does more for the eventual repair bill than any decision made afterward at a counter.
