A closed garage in August runs far hotter than the outside air, and a surprising share of what people keep there has a temperature limit printed on it.

Open a closed garage at five on a clear August afternoon and the wall of air that comes out is the whole subject of this piece. The mechanism behind it is not complicated: a large uninsulated door absorbs sun for most of the day, the space has almost no ventilation, and the concrete slab releases stored heat slowly for hours after dark, so the room runs well above the outdoor temperature and stays there into the evening. Everything stored in there is sitting in that, and a surprising amount of it does not tolerate the conditions at all.

What the Heat Actually Damages

Paint and stains come first, because water-based products separate and lose the ability to recombine, so a can that has been through two summers rarely applies correctly even when it still looks liquid on the surface. Batteries are second and the damage is universal across chemistries, with heat accelerating self-discharge and shortening life in tool packs, spare vehicle batteries and the lithium packs in bicycles and yard equipment alike. Aerosols and fuels carry stated maximum storage temperatures, and gasoline in a container vents and degrades, both of which are reasons to keep no more of either in a garage than the next month requires.

The list continues past the obvious. Adhesives, caulk and sealants cure inside the tube. Canned food, dry goods and pet food lose oils to rancidity and shed shelf life well ahead of any printed date. Medications, including anything for animals, carry storage ranges that exist for a reason. Stored electronics age faster through their capacitors and batteries, and condensation on a cool morning affects the boards. Documents and photographs meet heat plus humidity, which is the standard recipe for the ruined box that comes out of a garage years later. The refrigerator or freezer many households keep out there deserves its own line, since most are rated for an ambient range and running one above that range shortens compressor life and can make a freezer compartment behave unpredictably, while models genuinely rated for garage use exist and say so on the label.

Moving the Air Is the Cheapest Thing That Works

Heat accumulates in a garage largely because nothing exchanges, so the first intervention to try is also the least expensive. A gable vent, a pair of vents at opposite ends of the space, or a powered exhaust fan with an intake placed on the shaded side will pull the afternoon peak down substantially for very little money. What ventilation does well is reduce the extreme peak, clear fumes and help with moisture. What it cannot do is bring the space anywhere near indoor temperature, or help at all on a day when the outdoor air is itself brutally hot. It is worth doing in nearly every case, because it is cheap and because it improves both of the other two options rather than competing with either.

Insulation Flattens the Peak Rather Than Removing It

Insulation does not cool anything. It slows the rate at which heat moves inward, which flattens the peak and delays its arrival, and in an unconditioned garage that is still a meaningful improvement, particularly for whatever room sits above. The priorities in order of effect for the money are the ceiling where there is living space above it, then the garage door as the largest sun-facing surface, then the shared wall with the house while respecting the fire separation requirements that apply to it, then the exterior walls with the sun-facing side first. Adding weight to a door means the counterbalance spring has to be adjusted to match, which is work for somebody with winding bars and belongs in the budget from the start. Insulation and ventilation also work as a pair, since insulation reduces how much heat enters while ventilation removes what does, and doing one without the other in an unconditioned space can trap heat overnight.

Conditioning It, and Why It Comes Last

A ductless heat pump or a through-wall unit will hold a garage at a chosen temperature, and it is the only option here that solves the problem outright rather than reducing it. It is also the only one that genuinely requires the other two first, because conditioning an uninsulated and unsealed garage behind a large uninsulated door is expensive to run and may not keep up at all on the days it is most wanted. The honest case for it is a garage used as a workshop, a gym, or storage for things that truly need a controlled environment. For a space holding a car and a lawn mower, the first two fixes are the entire answer.

What to Move Out Regardless

Some things do not belong in a hot garage at any level of improvement, and moving them costs nothing at all. Paint you intend to use again belongs on a closet or basement shelf. Spare batteries and battery-powered tool packs come inside. So do photographs, documents and anything on tape or film, along with medications, supplements, wine and anything else carrying a storage temperature. Propane cylinders belong outside and shaded rather than inside an attached space at any time of year. Vent first and leave a cheap thermometer on a shelf to measure what changed, insulate the ceiling and the door if the peak is still high or the room above is uncomfortable, and consider conditioning only after both. Most households find that the first two steps solve the problem they actually had, which was a hot bedroom over the garage and a shelf of paint nobody can use.
