What summer heat does to everything stored in the garage, and three ways to fix it
An attached garage in August runs far hotter than the outside air, and most of what people store there has a temperature limit printed on it.

A closed garage with a west-facing door climbs well above the outdoor temperature on a clear August afternoon and stays there into the evening. The mechanism is straightforward: a large uninsulated surface absorbs sun, the space has little ventilation, and concrete releases stored heat slowly after dark.
Everything in there is sitting in that. Some of it does not tolerate it.
What the heat actually damages
- Paint and stains. Water-based products separate and lose their ability to recombine. A can that has been through two summers rarely applies correctly even if it still looks liquid.
- Batteries. Heat accelerates self-discharge and shortens life in every chemistry. This includes tool batteries, spare vehicle batteries and the lithium packs in bicycles and yard equipment.
- Aerosols and fuels. Pressurized cans have a stated maximum storage temperature, and gasoline in a container vents and degrades. Both are also the reason a garage should not be where you keep more of either than you need.
- Adhesives, caulk and sealants. They cure in the tube.
- Canned and dry food, and pet food. Oils go rancid, and heat shortens shelf life well before any date on the package.
- Medications and anything with an active ingredient. Storage ranges are printed for a reason.
- Electronics in storage. Capacitors and batteries in stored equipment age faster, and condensation on a cool morning affects boards.
- Documents and photographs. Heat plus humidity is the standard recipe for the boxes that come out of a garage ruined.
The refrigerator or freezer many households keep in the garage deserves its own note. Most are rated for an ambient range, and running one above that range shortens compressor life and can cause a freezer compartment to behave unpredictably. Models rated for garage use exist and say so.
Fix one: move the air
The cheapest intervention and the one to try first.
Heat accumulates because nothing exchanges. A gable vent, a pair of vents at opposite ends, or a powered exhaust fan with an intake on the shaded side will pull the peak down substantially for a small cost.
What it does well: reduces the extreme afternoon peak, removes fumes, and helps with moisture. What it does not do: get the space near indoor temperature, or help at all when the outdoor air is itself very hot.
Worth doing in almost every case, because it is inexpensive and it improves the other two options rather than competing with them.
Fix two: insulate
Insulation does not cool. It slows the rate at which heat moves in, which flattens the peak and delays it. In a garage that is not conditioned, that is still a meaningful improvement, particularly for the room above.
Priorities, in order of effect for the money:
- The ceiling, if there is living space above it.
- The garage door, which is the largest sun-facing surface. Remember that adding weight to a door requires the counterbalance spring to be adjusted.
- The shared wall with the house, respecting the fire separation requirements that apply to it.
- Exterior walls, which matter most on the sun-facing side.
Insulation and ventilation work together: insulation reduces how much heat enters, ventilation removes what does. Doing one without the other in an unconditioned space can trap heat overnight, which is why the pair is the standard recommendation.
Fix three: condition it
A ductless heat pump or a through-wall unit will hold a garage at a chosen temperature. It is the only option that actually solves the problem rather than reducing it.
It is also the only one that requires the other two first. Conditioning an uninsulated, unsealed garage with a large uninsulated door is expensive to run and may not keep up at all.
The honest case for it is a garage used as a workshop, a gym or storage for things that genuinely need a controlled environment. For a space that holds a car and a lawn mower, the first two fixes are the whole answer.
What to move out regardless
Some things do not belong in a hot garage at any level of improvement.
- Paint you intend to use again. A closet or basement shelf costs nothing.
- Spare batteries and battery-powered tools. Bring the packs inside.
- Photographs, documents and anything on tape or film.
- Medications, including pet medications and supplements.
- Wine, and anything else with a storage temperature.
- Propane cylinders, which belong outside and shaded rather than in an attached space.
The order that costs least
Vent first and measure the difference with a cheap thermometer left on a shelf. Then insulate the ceiling and the door if the peak is still high or the room above is uncomfortable. Consider conditioning only after both, and only if the space has a use that justifies it.
Done in that order, most households find the first two steps solve the problem they actually had, which was usually a hot room over the garage and a shelf full of ruined paint.
